. >> the first u.s. presidential debate between president obama and mitt romney is tonight in denver. the focus is on domestic issues and expectations are set high. new jersey's republican governor chris christie told "face the nation" this whole race is going to turn upside down come thursday morning. this as the latest nbc "wall street journal" poll shows president obama holds a narrow 49-46% lead over romney. some 40% of voters say the country is moving in the right direction versus 53% who say it's on the wrong track. nearly 60% believe the u.s. economy is recovering, though. joining us now is steve murphy, a democratic strategist and managing partner at mvar, and gretchen hamill is a republican strategist and executive director at public notice. nice to have you both with us. steve, perhaps you can kick it off for us. what do you think tonight holds? >> you know, here's what barack obama has to do. the debate right now in the campaign is very heavily over economic policy going forward. that's where barack obama wants to focus. he will accuse mitt romney of seeking $4 trillion, $5 trillion

things come to fruition, i think he's going to win the presidential election, i'm pretty happy about it. >> governor rendell we noticed that president obama in the last debate did not look like he's prepared. i doubt we'll see the same performance the next time around. what do you think he needs to do? >> well i think he needs to be more aggressive. first of all he needs to be more passionate about his accomplishments and his accomplishments i think are fairly significant. he took over a country that was on the brink of financial collapse, saved the financial syst system, got the american automobile manufacturing system again, we've had half a million manufacturing jobs, best period of manufacturing growth in a while, housing starts are up, consumer confidence is up, automobile sales are up, rail traffic is up, the unemployment rate is under 8%, we're headed in the right direction and i think he's got to be pretty affirmative about that and i think he also has to call governor romney on the inconsistencies we saw in the first debate but i think jim is right, governor romney terrific per

of the very first debate between president obama and governor mitt romney. fox news alert for you right now. this a news conference underway concerning breaking news in the presidential race. a pennsylvania judge decide tog puing to put a voter i.d. law on hold. this is a ruling that has upset conservatives already. some are calling it a victory for voter shaun. eric shawn is live with here. >> reporter: they are calling this decision a big win, the aclu. at pennsylvania when you show up at the polls in november you will be asked, or you could be asked to show your voter i.d., but understand this new ruling you don't have to show it. both sides indeed calling this a victory. it comes from commonwealth judge robert simpson. he backed the law originally and let voter i.d. stay but it's not enforced in order to vote. he blocked part of the law that requires people without an i.d. to vote by provisional ballot if they provide documentation within six days. he feared that could diseven franchise voters if people couldn't come up with the proof. he's also concerned about the distribution of id's

that we could have an electoral tie. highly unlikely. so i don't think the election's over. b obama has the lead. we still have a month to go. the next two weeks with three presidential, one vice presidential debates, we have a chance for mitt romney to set a different impression with the american people than he's been able to do so far. who knows what president obama will do and what events are happening in the world. but i'm not sure other than some tightening from a little surge that obama had which i think is receding a little bit, i'm not sure what nate is talking about. >> john, you wrote a column that talks about the debates and the impact of the debates traditionally. and made the case that traditionally it makes very little impact. >> there are many individual moments that make an impression. but to fundamentally change where a race is going is very rare and you need a combination of events. the example that i used in that piece, andrew, was 2000, al gore had a lead of about what president obama has now entering the debates against george w. bush. he had a reputation as a stron

that single- minded focus on jobs and economic issues. >> you talked about the vice- presidential debate coming up. there is also a foreign policy debate coming up on october 22. is this a preview for that debate and does that open the play book for the obama camp to see what mayor romney is going to talk about at that foreign policy debate? >> -- what mitt romney is going to talk about. >> i think we have heard many of these arguments before, after , governorattacke romney came out and made these points pretty forcefully. from what we have seen, today's speech is going to be a maybe even stronger assertion of his views of those issues. having been on the campaign trail and talk to voters that some of the paul ryan events, it's an argument that has resonated, particularly when it comes to things like foreign aid and how the country is spending its resources. exactly see the relationship being a reciprocal one. that could also be one area the romney campaign is looking for when they decided to hold this speech. >> i want to read a piece of the speech that was released yesterday. let us kn

putting one face there, ben bernanke will stay on if barack obama is reelected. on the right-hand side we see potential romney cabinet selections, glenn hubbard, he's been an economic adviser to both romney's presidential campaigns, last time and again this time, and john taylor at stanford university is also somebody who is mentioned frequently. look at state department as well that's obviously one that is a moving part right now because this interesting tension in washington on the obama side if he's reelected between john kerry who might have done himself some good with his speech at the democratic national convention, and susan rice is somebody who is often mentioned. now, this recent flap over libya and what the united states said or did not say about the situation there might have damaged her prospects a little bit. we'll have to watch that one, on the romney side robert zoellick, former world bank president and richard haass, president of the council of foreign relations mention there had and treasury secretary we talked about some of the names for the obama cabinet starting with t
